What you did not know about your favorite video games

Video games are every boys (and even some girls) favorite past time. From Contra to even Super Mario to more complex and intricate games like Call of Duty, video games have always managed to captivate the minds of young children all over the world. This popularity has contributed largely to the growth of the video game industry over the past few years.

It has even developed a cult status and has spawned several blockbuster feature films that have raked in equally good money. But have you ever wondered why these video games are so popular? There are some experts who agree that video games, like capitalism, cater to man’s need to determine his own success. These video games also provide an escape from the reality of everyday life. Only with the help of these games can children fulfill some of their fantasies.

However, there are some interesting and fun facts that are associated with some of the best video games in the world. Listed below are just some of those fun facts:

  • In the video game Sonic the Hedgehog, the name Sonic is not only the name of Sega's speedy mascot; the name also refers to the gene on chromosome 7 which forms part of the human genome. It should be noted that only recently did the science community decided to opt for new names for their genes.

  • The Bourne Supremacy’s lead actor, Matt Damon refused to participate in the video game version of the film as he opined that it portrayed too much violence.

  • Video game enthusiasts will also be surprised to know that the less than successful E.T. game which was developed for Atari 2600 was actually a better success and sold more video games than the hugely popular Space Invaders by over 500,000 copies.

  • Because of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the game developer Rockstar decided to remove a character from the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto 3. This new character was to be called Darkel – a homeless man who would have the ability to rig buildings and blow them up.

  • It is also interesting to note that there are presently a little over 100 million Game Boys globally - both the original version as well as its colour variant. It is estimated that around 32 million of them can be found in them while 44 million can be traced to America.
